A Career As A Midwife Sonographer

A midwife sonographer is not quite yet a household term, though most know what a midwife does. As far as sonography is concerned, we usually hear it discussed under the title of ultrasound, a technology that has been around for quite a few years. Of course, the profession of the midwife has been with us for centuries, but it is only very recently that those in the profession have had ultrasound available to them to help them in their work. Combine and honored profession with a highly useful technology, and you have your midwife sonographer.

For those unfamiliar with ultrasound technology, some training is obviously in order, in fact in most situations one must hold at least an associates degree to qualify for the position of midwife sonographer. Those who do will find themselves among the top ten best paying jobs for holders of an associate degree. In other words, the value always associated with the work of the midwife, has become even greater.

Formal Training Requirements Can Vary - Not all sonographers have the same specialty. Some specialize in cardiac sonography, and others choose other categories. A midwife would train to become an obstetric sonographer. While a background of math and science are helpful in getting into a school that teaches sonography, an experienced midwife would usually have no trouble in pursing a degree in obstetric sonograph as previous medical knowledge is highly valuable. The math and science can come later.

Some who aspire to become a midwife sonographer may pursue a four year program leading to a bachelor's degree, but most opt for a two year program leading to an associate’s degree. An experienced midwife can often land a position as a midwife sonographer with one year of training, leading to a certificate in obstetric sonography, as that person would often be well versed in patient care, medical ethics, and possibly even anatomy, and would not be required to take those courses. The focus would be on instrumentation and obstetrics.

Then There's Certification, Licensing, And Finding A Position - There's more involved than formal education of course. One will have to register with the appropriate register of medical sonographers, in this case an obstetric register, and also take and pass the exams required for certification. Once certified, the prospective midwife sonographer would then have to apply for a license to practice. The requirements for a license, and to some degree for certification, generally will vary from state to state. If one's formal classes take place in the same state one is intending to practice in, the requirements for a license should hold few surprises. If a midwife sonographer moves from one state to another however, she may well have to go though a new certification and licensing process, though in most cases the degree or certificate earned will likely remain valid. This is an area where it's always best to check into early, if moving from one state to another seems a possibility.

Two Jobs, One Person - The midwife sonographer position often substitutes for what normally would involve two separate positions. A sonographer often has only a rudimentary knowledge of the medical aspects of the task being performed. The sonographer knows how to operate the equipment in a way to get the most meaningful images, but it may take a medical professional to correctly interpret those images. The one with a medical background is called a sonologist, while the one working the instrumentation is the sonographer. In the world of cardiac medicine, a sonographer would take images of the heart, but those images would be analyzed by a cardiologist. An obstetric sonographer would have the images analyzed by an obstetrician. A midwife sonographer however could be expected to handle both responsibilities.
